Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency that began as a meme token in 2020 and has since developed into a broader Web3 ecosystem.
SHIB remains the project’s best-known asset, but modern Shiba Inu encompasses considerably more than the token that first attracted attention during the 2021 meme-coin boom. The ecosystem now includes the Shibarium Ethereum Layer 2, the ShibaSwap decentralized exchange, token-burning mechanisms, community governance and additional tokens including BONE, LEASH and TREAT.
That evolution can make Shiba Inu confusing to research. SHIB is not the native gas token of Shibarium, Shibarium is not a replacement for Ethereum, and the different Shiba Inu ecosystem tokens do not all serve the same purpose.
Understanding Shiba Inu today therefore means separating the original SHIB token from the infrastructure and applications that have subsequently grown around it.

What Is Shiba Inu?#
Shiba Inu started as an experiment in community-driven cryptocurrency.
The project was introduced in August 2020 by a pseudonymous creator known as Ryoshi. Its branding centered on the Shiba Inu dog breed already made famous in cryptocurrency culture by Dogecoin.
That naturally caused SHIB to be grouped with meme coins, and its early community adopted the provocative “Dogecoin Killer” description.
There is an important technical difference between the two projects, however.
Dogecoin is the native currency of its own Proof-of-Work blockchain. SHIB originated as an ERC-20 token issued on Ethereum. It therefore did not launch with its own independent blockchain, miners or native consensus mechanism.
This distinction remains important even after the introduction of Shibarium.
SHIB is still a token associated with the wider Shiba Inu ecosystem rather than the native coin used to pay gas on Shibarium.
What Is SHIB Used For?#
SHIB is the original and most recognizable token of the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
The official project describes it primarily as its community token, with integrations spanning payments, decentralized finance and other parts of the ecosystem.
SHIB can also be used within compatible DeFi applications such as ShibaSwap.
Its role should nevertheless be distinguished from those of the other official Shiba Inu tokens.
The ecosystem has gradually divided different functions between several assets rather than attempting to make SHIB responsible for network gas, governance, rewards and every other activity.
What Is Shibarium?#
Shibarium is an Ethereum Layer 2 developed for the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
Its purpose is to provide an EVM-compatible environment in which applications can operate with lower transaction costs and faster processing than would typically be practical directly on Ethereum mainnet.
Shibarium mainnet uses:
- Chain ID: 109
- Gas token: BONE
- EVM compatibility: Yes
- Block explorer: ShibariumScan
The official Shiba Inu developer documentation describes Shibarium as a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum and supports familiar Ethereum development tools and Solidity smart contracts.
Does Shibarium Use SHIB for Gas?#
No.
This is one of the most important distinctions in the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
BONE, not SHIB, is the native gas token used on Shibarium.
The official network configuration lists BONE as Shibarium’s currency symbol, while the mainnet uses Chain ID 109.
SHIB can exist and be used on Shibarium, but holding SHIB and paying Shibarium transaction fees are separate functions.
SHIB Is Now Multichain#
Although SHIB originated on Ethereum, its current implementation is no longer confined to one network.
Shiba Inu’s official token portal publishes SHIB contracts for Ethereum, Shibarium and a range of additional supported chains, including BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, Avalanche and others.
That makes contract verification increasingly important.
The original Ethereum SHIB contract is:
0x95aD61b0a150d79219dCF64E1E6Cc01f0B64C4cE
The SHIB contract on Shibarium is different:
0x495eea66B0f8b636D441dC6a98d8F5C3D455C4c0
Users should not assume that an address valid on one network is automatically valid on another.
Because SHIB is widely known, counterfeit tokens and misleading contract addresses are also a practical risk. The appropriate contract should be checked against official Shiba Inu resources for the specific network being used.
SHIB, BONE, LEASH and TREAT Explained#
Modern Shiba Inu operates as a multi-token ecosystem.
Each of its principal tokens has a different stated role.
SHIB — Community#
SHIB is the original Shiba Inu token and remains the asset most closely associated with the project and its community.
It is an ERC-20 token at its origin and can participate in payments, DeFi and other ecosystem applications.
BONE — Technology and Gas#
BONE is used as the gas token for Shibarium.
It is also associated with governance and other network functions. Anyone making transactions directly on Shibarium therefore needs BONE for gas rather than SHIB.
LEASH — Exclusivity#
LEASH has historically occupied the exclusivity-oriented part of the ecosystem.
Its role has included access to selected opportunities, features and benefits associated with the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
TREAT — Rewards and Governance#
TREAT is the newest of the four principal ecosystem tokens.
Shiba Inu describes TREAT as a rewards, access, governance and voting token, expanding the project’s incentive and governance infrastructure.
The presence of four tokens can make the ecosystem appear more complicated than projects built around a single native asset. Researchers should therefore examine the purpose and contract of each token independently rather than treating every Shiba Inu-branded asset as equivalent to SHIB.
What Is ShibaSwap?#
ShibaSwap is the decentralized exchange associated with the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
It allows users to interact with token swaps, liquidity pools, staking and other DeFi functions through compatible self-custody wallets.
ShibaSwap has itself evolved.
The current ShibaSwap v2 documentation describes a concentrated-liquidity architecture with multiple fee tiers, non-fungible liquidity positions and Shibarium integration.
Concentrated liquidity allows liquidity providers to allocate capital within particular price ranges rather than spreading it uniformly across every possible price.
That can improve capital efficiency, but it also makes liquidity management more complex.
Using a decentralized exchange introduces risks beyond simply owning SHIB. These can include smart-contract vulnerabilities, impermanent loss, slippage, malicious tokens and incorrect contract approvals.
How Do SHIB Burns Work?#
Token burning has become one of the most discussed aspects of SHIB’s economics.
A cryptocurrency burn permanently removes tokens from practical circulation by sending them to an address from which they cannot normally be spent.
Shiba Inu’s official materials describe SHIB as incorporating community-driven and ecosystem-linked burns, including ShibTorch.
The broader multichain token system also includes mechanisms through which activity can contribute toward token burns.
This is significant for supply accounting, but it is important to separate supply changes from price predictions.
Burning SHIB does not guarantee that its market price will increase.
Market value can be influenced by demand, liquidity, trading activity, macroeconomic conditions, ecosystem usage, speculation and many other variables. A lower token supply is only one part of that picture.
What Is the SHIB DAO?#
Governance has also become a formal part of the Shiba Inu ecosystem.
Official documentation describes a system of Doggy DAOs associated with the ecosystem’s principal tokens.
These currently include:
BONE DAO for core ecosystem decisions and protocol upgrades.
TREAT DAO for rewards, utility and related decisions.
SHIB DAO for community initiatives and ecosystem partnerships.
LEASH DAO for exclusive features and associated governance.
The broader SHIB DAO system operates on Shibarium and is designed to allow community participation in proposals and voting.
Governance infrastructure can continue evolving, so current voting rules and active proposals should be checked through the official DAO interfaces rather than relying on older descriptions of how the system works.
Is Shiba Inu Still a Meme Coin?#
Yes, but the label now describes only part of the project.
SHIB undeniably originated in meme-coin culture. Its Shiba Inu branding, community identity and relationship to the broader Doge meme remain fundamental parts of its history.
At the same time, it would be incomplete to describe the current project as nothing more than an ERC-20 meme token.
Shiba Inu now has an Ethereum Layer 2, decentralized exchange, developer infrastructure, governance systems, naming services, token burns and multiple ecosystem assets. Its official developer documentation also provides tooling for developers to deploy smart contracts and applications on Shibarium.
The better distinction is therefore between SHIB the meme-origin token and Shiba Inu the wider Web3 ecosystem.
The existence of that infrastructure does not, by itself, determine SHIB’s value or future adoption. Technical development and token-market performance are separate questions.
Can SHIB Be Mined?#
No — SHIB is not mined in the way Bitcoin, Litecoin or Dogecoin are mined.
SHIB originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum rather than as the block reward of an independent Proof-of-Work blockchain.
That means websites or services claiming to provide conventional “SHIB mining” should be examined carefully. Some may simply mine another cryptocurrency and pay participants in SHIB rather than actually mining SHIB itself.
Shibarium also does not convert SHIB into a mineable asset.
What Should You Verify Before Using SHIB?#
Shiba Inu’s popularity creates an additional verification problem: the existence of fake tokens, impersonation websites and fraudulent applications attempting to imitate official ecosystem products.
Before moving funds or approving a wallet transaction, verify the exact network being used and confirm the corresponding contract through an official source.
Particular attention should be paid when bridging assets between Ethereum and Shibarium or when moving between other supported networks. A valid SHIB contract on Ethereum is not the same address as SHIB on Shibarium.
Users should also inspect wallet approvals carefully when interacting with decentralized applications. Connecting a wallet does not automatically transfer assets, but signing malicious approvals or transactions can.
Open blockchain infrastructure provides transparency, but it does not eliminate smart-contract, bridge, application or market risk.
Shiba Inu Today#
The Shiba Inu of 2026 is substantially different from the project that appeared during the 2020–2021 meme-token cycle.
SHIB remains a meme-origin cryptocurrency and community asset, but the infrastructure around it has expanded.
Shibarium provides an Ethereum Layer 2 environment. BONE handles Shibarium gas. ShibaSwap provides decentralized trading and liquidity infrastructure. TREAT, LEASH and BONE serve different ecosystem roles alongside SHIB. Governance has developed into a collection of DAOs, while burn systems and multichain deployments have further changed how the tokens operate.
None of those additions make the speculative risks surrounding SHIB disappear.
They do, however, mean that researching Shiba Inu purely through its old “Dogecoin Killer” reputation misses much of what exists today.
The useful way to understand the project is to separate the layers: SHIB is the original token; Shibarium is the Layer 2 infrastructure; BONE is its gas token; ShibaSwap provides DeFi functionality; and the wider Shiba Inu ecosystem connects these components with governance, rewards and community applications.
Frequently Asked Questions#
What is Shiba Inu (SHIB)?#
Shiba Inu is a cryptocurrency ecosystem that originated with the Ethereum-based SHIB token in 2020. It has since expanded to include Shibarium, ShibaSwap, governance systems and several ecosystem tokens.
Is SHIB a coin or a token?#
SHIB originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. It is not the native coin of an independent Layer 1 blockchain.
Does Shiba Inu have its own blockchain?#
The Shiba Inu ecosystem includes Shibarium, an Ethereum Layer 2. SHIB itself originally launched on Ethereum and should not be confused with Shibarium’s native gas asset.
Does Shibarium use SHIB for gas?#
No. BONE is used to pay gas fees on Shibarium.
Is Shiba Inu the same as Dogecoin?#
No. Both use Shiba Inu dog imagery and have strong meme cultures, but they are technically different. Dogecoin operates its own Proof-of-Work Layer 1 blockchain, while SHIB originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
Can SHIB be mined?#
SHIB cannot be mined through Proof of Work like Bitcoin or Dogecoin. Services described as “SHIB mining” may mine another asset and distribute rewards in SHIB.
What are BONE, LEASH and TREAT?#
They are additional official tokens within the Shiba Inu ecosystem. BONE is associated with Shibarium gas and governance, LEASH with exclusivity, and TREAT with rewards, access and governance.
What is the official SHIB Ethereum contract?#
The official Ethereum contract is:
0x95aD61b0a150d79219dCF64E1E6Cc01f0B64C4cE
Users should independently verify the contract and network before interacting with a token.
Do SHIB burns guarantee a higher price?#
No. Burns can reduce available supply, but they cannot guarantee higher market prices. Demand, liquidity, market conditions, ecosystem usage and speculation can all affect SHIB’s price.
