Overview

About Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency launched in August 2020 by the pseudonymous creator Ryoshi. Originally introduced as a community-driven meme token inspired by the Shiba Inu dog breed, SHIB has since developed into the central asset of a broader Web3 ecosystem encompassing decentralized finance, blockchain infrastructure, NFTs and community governance.

SHIB was created as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with an original supply of 1,000,000,000,000,000 tokens. Half of the initial supply was placed into Uniswap liquidity, while the other half was transferred to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Buterin later permanently removed a large portion of those tokens from circulation and donated part of his holdings. SHIB continues to use token-burning mechanisms that reduce supply over time.

The ecosystem has expanded beyond the original Ethereum token through Shibarium, an EVM-compatible Layer 2 network designed for lower-cost and faster transactions. Shibarium uses Proof of Stake with BONE as its staking and gas token, meaning SHIB itself is not the native gas asset of Shibarium. The network supports decentralized applications and connects back to Ethereum through bridging and checkpoint infrastructure.

Other parts of the ecosystem include ShibaSwap, decentralized governance initiatives, NFTs, Shib: The Metaverse and additional ecosystem tokens including BONE, LEASH and TREAT. SHIB remains the ecosystem’s primary community token and is used for transfers, trading and payments through supported services.

The Shiba Inu ecosystem has also expanded SHIB beyond Ethereum through multichain deployments. Shib.io currently lists support for 14 networks, including Ethereum, Shibarium, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon and Avalanche, with cross-chain infrastructure powered by Chainlink CCIP.

Despite this expansion, SHIB should be distinguished from Shibarium itself: SHIB is an ERC-20 cryptocurrency that originated on Ethereum, while Shibarium is the ecosystem’s separate Layer 2 blockchain infrastructure.
