Open-source Layer 1 blockchain combining Scrypt Proof of Work and Proof of Stake, with self-custody wallet software and public network…

Privacy-focused Layer 1 combining ProgPowZ mining, Zarcanum staking, Confidential Assets and private peer-to-peer swaps.
Overview
Zano is an open-source Layer 1 blockchain for private payments, confidential digital assets and peer-to-peer trading. Its mainnet launched on 8 May 2019, following development and a public announcement in 2018. Zano operates its own blockchain and uses ZANO as its native cryptocurrency.
The network currently combines Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. Mining uses the ProgPowZ algorithm, while Zarcanum enables staking without publicly revealing the amounts being staked. The network targets an average block interval of approximately one minute.
Zano’s privacy technology combines ring signatures, stealth addresses, cryptographic commitments and range proofs to conceal transaction participants, amounts and asset types. Confidential Assets extend these protections to user-issued tokens on the Zano blockchain. Optional auditable wallets allow wallet records to be shared for verification without granting spending access.
The ecosystem includes Zano Trade, which uses Ionic Swaps for on-chain, peer-to-peer asset exchange. Human-readable aliases simplify payments and support authentication across compatible applications. Official wallets, documentation and open-source node software provide access to the network.
ZANO has no fixed maximum supply. Under the current emission model, each block creates 1 ZANO, while network transaction fees are burned. Net supply growth therefore depends on both issuance and fee burning. The initial distribution included a voluntary Boolberry-to-Zano coinswap and a disclosed development premine of 3,690,000 ZANO.
The team has announced Zenith, a proposed transition to privacy-preserving pure Proof of Stake. As of 4 October 2026, this remains a future upgrade; the live network continues to use hybrid PoW/PoS consensus.
