Open-source Layer 1 blockchain combining Scrypt Proof of Work and Proof of Stake, with self-custody wallet software and public network…

Privacy-focused transactions and four mining methods distinguish Tari (XTM), a Mimblewimble-based Layer 1 secured by hybrid Proof of Work and Monero merge mining.
Overview
Tari (XTM) is an open-source Layer 1 blockchain whose mainnet launched on May 6, 2025. The base network, also known as Minotari, combines Proof-of-Work security with Mimblewimble-based confidential transactions and serves as the settlement layer for the wider Tari ecosystem.
Privacy is built into Tari’s transaction architecture through Mimblewimble. Transaction amounts and participant information are obscured using cryptographic commitments, while Tari extends the basic Mimblewimble model with features including TariScript, stealth addresses, one-sided payments and burn transactions.
Tari uses a hybrid multi-algorithm Proof-of-Work model rather than relying on a single mining algorithm. Four methods currently participate in block production: RandomX merge mining with Monero, standalone Tari RandomX, SHA3X and Cuckaroo29. Each maintains its own mining difficulty, with the combined system targeting an average block interval of approximately two minutes.
XTM is the native asset of Tari’s Layer 1 network and is distributed through mining. The emission model targets 21 billion XTM over its initial issuance period, but this is not a hard maximum supply. Once annual issuance falls to 1% of the target supply, a perpetual 1% annual tail emission is designed to continue rewarding miners and supporting network security.
The wider Tari architecture also includes Ootle, a programmable Byzantine fault-tolerant Layer 2 designed for decentralized applications and confidential digital assets. Its native TARI asset is created by permanently burning XTM at a 1:1 ratio through Tari’s Turbine Model, linking the economics of the two network layers.
Users can interact with the ecosystem through Tari Universe, which combines self-custodial wallet functionality with mining tools. The protocol itself is developed openly, with the base-layer node, wallet, mining software and consensus specifications available for independent review.
In 2026, Tari also moved toward a more community-led governance model through the Tari Council and Core Contributor program while development of the protocol and planned Ootle ecosystem continued.
